While vacationing in northwest Arkansas I spent some time looking around at a couple old barns that were constructed of oak. Oak is a hardwood that provides many animals with homes and food and is also a wood that resists rot. Barns made of it can stand for hundreds of years. The wood takes on a beautiful patina as it ages. I was inspired to make a piece that honors the legacy of the farmers and agrarians that built this country and that are part of my family heritage. The piece includes a slab of oak with elements of forged steel to give it the feel of old farm equipment. I also wanted to make a piece in which the elements of design are strongly represented. I chose the barn owl because it is iconic of the old barn and is also a metaphor for wise direction through the darkness.
