While in Florida visiting my brother we had the pleasure of watching a pair of sandhill cranes wean their full grown chicks. I got an opportunity to take several really good photos because they were hanging around the yard and being generally annoying pecking at their reflections in the cars, squawking early in the morning and getting in the way of traffic. This is a much different experience than seeing them on the annual migration down the North Platte or Rio Grande. Being in a totally natural environment while watching vast flocks of them lift off and take flight is truly awesome! Where I live in Colorado we only see them flying in formation at a very high altitude. This piece is a celebration of the mating rituals and migration of the sandhill crane. It is on a pedestal made of steel and stone which has a design that is reminiscent of the river basins that they follow on their way south. It is also available without the pedestal as a table top or mantel display piece.
