I happened to be lying in my swimming pool staring up at the clouds on the Fourth of July when there was a hatch of dragonflies that came hovering around. It was a very challenging day for me because my former wife and I were coming to the end of our relationship and I was struggling every day to stay put together emotionally. Swimming is one thing that brings me peace. The presence of the dragonflies added a level of awe and wonder to the moment. It was like getting an embrace from God through his creation. I needed to make a piece that spoke of that moment and this is it. I call it “independence” in reference to the day it was inspired but also because dragonflies are highly territorial and independent. Its fun to watch them defend their chosen cattail from other flying things. It also represents the transition I was making to a new paradigm of independence in my personal life. The bundle across the top is a design element found in Japanese art. It probably has some meaning but I don’t know what it is.
