The most common owl in the west is the great horned owl. Many nights I have listened to them call and hoot to each other. They are common and successful because they are opportunistic, eating a great variety of things. One of my fond memories and one that I’ve passed on to my children is having my dad show us where to find “owl pellets” (the tidy little ball of bones and fur that they regurgitate) and to open them up to find out what it ate. This piece developed as a commission. The client came into one of my galleries and loved my barn owl piece but wanted one with a great horned owl because she had been involved in rescue and rehabilitation of one. She agreed to allow me to make it an edition.
