On one of our trips to Arizona we stopped at Petrified Forest National Park. It is one of those weird places that is not to be missed if you happen to be driving I-40 through Arizona. I was in total awe of the formations and petrified trees . It really got my wheels turning about how much the earth has changed. In one of the pull-offs is a group of petroglyphs called Newspaper Rock. Along with a lot of other glyphs is a drawing of a blue heron eating a frog. In looking at the river bed that runs in the distance from the rock I felt very much that this was a plein-air drawing done by an ancient person. I took a photo and replicated the scene as a glyph, a modern impressionist relief and as an abstract design on a monumental bell. Blue herons remind me to be deliberate, calm and patient.
