Cedar waxwings are abundant in the summer here in Wenatchee, Washington. It is not a surprise considering the variety and abundance of fruit available to them. I saw a flock of them down by the river all chattering and eating berries recently. I love their smooth silky rust color with the splashes of bright red and yellow; but in this sculpture, I wanted to capture an image of a behavior they exhibit in which they pass a berry to each other. It seems to be some kind of communal bonding ceremony. I titled the piece “communion song” because it reminded me of the ceremony that I participate in often with my church family. Communion is a commemorative and bonding ceremony that Christians all around the world practice. I love that these little birds exhibit the importance of participating in community. They remind me that participating in my community is what gives me a sense of purpose and helps me stay emotionally strong.
