This piece is a celebration of the Brazos River basin, its history and some of the iconic flora and fauna that are there. The main feature of the bell is the longhorn cow chewing her cud while resting under the majestic limbs of a live oak. A mature longhorn is a majestic thing that I find a joy to look at. If I was a rancher I would have longhorns just because they are so awesome. The back of the bell has a rendering of the humble little bug-eating, banded armadillo. What an amazing and odd creature. While I understand the bad rap they get for tearing up yards I find them amusing and fun to watch and wish I saw more live ones instead of roadkill. The stand for this bell is made of steel and oak and is reminiscent of old farm and ranch or perhaps oilfield equipment. In my travels to Texas I have come to understand why Texans have an almost irrational love for their state. I love the vastness and open skies of west Texas, the trees and lakes of east Texas and the stunning beauty of the hill country. I still don’t get the whole Alamo thing haha.
