My daughter and I were driving my van through Yellowstone National Park and came upon a Bison Jam which just means there were a herd of bison in the road. As we crept along a big bull trotted along side our vehicle. My van is big and this animal looked like it could just nudge us off the road. I have always wished I had lived in a time when I could have seen the vast herds of bison. Fortunately, there are a couple places people can go and get a feel for these massive and noble animals. Yellowstone is one and Custer State Park in South Dakota is the other. This piece is a celebration of the bison. The front has a bull bison with a couple cows in the background. The landscape around them is reminiscent of the hills in South Dakota. The design on the back of the bell is inspired by Plains Indian patterns that were often put on a parfleche which is a case made of rawhide that is designed for carrying things much like a suitcase. The stand has cut out effigies of a bison heard running. They are also inspired by native American art.
