This garden bell is the first in a series of five pieces in which each piece will be representative of the regions of north America. These will include coastal, desert, pine forests, plains, and deciduous forests. In keeping with some of the themes I have been working with, each piece will have birds from the region on the stand and a tree from that region on the bell. I will also develop some textural abstractions that are typical of each region. “Beach Combers” represents the coasts and islands. While I realize that much of North American costal waters do not have palm trees I wanted to make a bell that really speaks to the unique serenity of the tropical regions. The sandpipers on the stand are typical of the shore birds that I love to watch. It amuses me to watch them run up and down the beach as the surf rushes in as though they don’t like to get their feet wet. I know they do this because they know the good tidbits of food are in the foam. To me there are few things as relaxing as walking a beach picking up the incredibly complex and beautiful things the ocean washes in. The designs on the stand and back of the bell are made up in part of things I have found.
